Health Information Library: Rehabilitation Services

Our Health Information Library provides information about physical, occupational and speech therapy services available at Central Baptist Hospital.

Rehabilitation Services

The rehabilitation services department includes physical and occupational therapy. The two disciplines work closely with patients and their family members to establish individual treatment programs. The goal of rehabilitation is for patients to achieve their maximal level of function. Physical therapy hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. Occupational therapy services are available six days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Physical Therapy

The physical therapist is a key member of the healthcare team, specially trained to improve movement and function, relieve pain and expand a patient's movement potential. Through evaluation and individualized treatment programs, physical therapists can treat existing problems and provide preventive healthcare for people with a variety of needs.

Commonly treated diagnoses include:
  • back and neck injuries;
  • chronic conditions related to degenerative diseases;
  • postoperative spinal surgeries;
  • total joint replacements;
  • fractures;
  • anterior cruciate ligament repair; and
  • rotator cuff injuries.
Physical therapists also work with children, individuals with cardiac disease, neurological impairment and wounds.

To receive physical therapy, you must have a written referral from your physician. Once a referral is received, a licensed physical therapist will evaluate your needs and set up an individual treatment program to best suit you. Therapy may include exercise to increase strength, endurance, coordination or range of motion. Modalities such as heat, ice, water or electricity are used to help relieve pain, muscle spasm or swelling and to promote healing.

For more information on how physical therapy can help you, call the rehabilitation services department at (859) 260-6144.

Occupational Therapy

The focus of occupational therapy is to work with the patient and family to achieve the maximal level of independence in daily life activities following an injury or illness. Occupational therapy works with people suffering from stroke, arthritis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, hand injuries, amputations, joint replacement, burns and those with visual and cognitive disorders. Occupational therapists assess a patient's mobility and how those functions affect activities of daily living. These activities include dressing, bathing, meal preparation, money management and some job skills.

To receive occupational therapy services, you must have a written referral from your doctor. Once the referral is received, a registered occupational therapist will complete an evaluation and develop an individualized treatment program specific to your needs.

For more information on occupational therapy, call the rehabilitation services department at (859) 260-6144.

Speech-Language Pathology

Our speech and language pathology services at Central Baptist Hospital are available on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Speech-language pathologists work with people who have communication or swallowing disorders. Speech and language disorders limit a person's ability to communicate with others.

People of all ages can experience difficulty with communication. Children may be delayed in the development of skills needed to talk, or may not be able to pronounce words well enough to be understood. These problems can interfere with a child's performance in school or his or her ability to get along with other children.

Children or adults may stutter or have voice disorders. Central Baptist Hospital has a special computer-aided program for the treatment of voice and stuttering disorders. The department also specializes in helping laryngectomies talk again after losing their voice box to cancer. The speech-language pathologist works closely with the patient and their family to help them achieve their maximum level of independence and rehabilitation possible.
